Gold Gallery

I'm in new gallery! This seems like an appropriate occasion to resurrect my sadly neglected blog. Gold Gallery in Boston has added me to their stable, and I'm really excited about it! It looks like a great gallery run by awesome people. They're featuring my work at their Third Thursday reception on July 19th.

Oyatsu To Gin - by Jeff

The title of this painting means "Snacks and Silver" in Japanese. I like painting these colorful products from a culture other than my own. They bring context to the composition that would probably feel completely different to someone from Japan.

Berlin Bicycle - by Jeff

I saw this bike outside the Berlin Hauptbahnhof (the main train station) in November of 2011. I took some serious liberties with the color of the bike: the original was a much yellower green. I wanted the bike to stand out from the grass and the vegetation across the water, so I invented a sort of metallic blue green for it. I'm continuing to explore a new direction here, in which I render the background elements in an abbreviated, painterly style, while going crazy hyper-real on the subject in the foreground.

Steel on Paper - by Jeff

Here's a funky little still life I just finished. I found this old Coke can inside one of the walls in my house when I was doing some renovation. The house was built in 1978, so I imagine the can is from that year. It picked up some nice rust over the years, but the paint still looks bright and new. And it's made of steel! Crazy! I put it with some other steel things so it wouldn't feel lonely.

Metal and Glass with Japanese Snacks - by Jeff

This little still life is a compilation of weird stuff that I thought looked good together. It was fun to paint!

Sunglasses City - new painting by Jeff

I just got this one glued up and varnished. It's a New York City street scene that I've decided to call "Sunglasses City." I think it may be one of the best things I've ever done!

New iPad App!

I have anew app available from the iTunes App store for the iPad. It's $1.99 and features 49 of my early still life paintings. I plan to have more volumes with different subjects soon.

Fledge - work in progress by Leslie

Here's Leslie working on a new painting. It will be combined with one of her line paintings of Emily... it's kind of hard to explain. Trust me, it's going to be cool.

It's tricky to photograph her working because we've both taken to painting under really bright, close up light. It helps to actually see what you're doing!

Holiday Lifeboats

Here's a painting of some lifeboats that I recently sent to Julie Nester Gallery in Park City Utah. They're taking it to the San Francisco Fine Art Fair this week.

Walk - new painting by Jeff

Here's a painting I did on commission. I was surprised by how much fun it was to paint all those crazy reflections in the glass buildings. If you look closely you can see that there are buildings reflected within buildings, and so on. Recursion!

Making Tiles

Some days are painting days, and some days are preparation days. Here's a little video of what I do to create the tiles I paint on. Some of the video is sped up - if I was really that fast, there's no way I would still have all my fingers!

More from the Stricoff Show

Back from New York, ready to paint!

We had a great time in New York! This was our first chance to meet the folks at Stricoff Fine Art, who are amazing. The show looked good and the reception was well attended. The last day we were there, the sun actually came out! I took lots of photos for reference, so look for some New York City paintings coming from Jeff and Leslie soon.

Group Show at Stricoff in New York

Leslie and Jeff will be flying to New York for this show! (Provided, of course, that the Atlanta airport doesn't cancel all flights due to a little snow.)

Iya - Completed painting by Jeff

This painting has been packed up and shipped to New York for the group show at Stricoff. The name of the piece is "Iya", which is what it says in the word balloon. It means "no," or so my son tells me. I think it's some kind of slang pronunciation. Whatever. I like not knowing what the Japanese writing in my paintings means until I finish them.

I'll be at the reception for the opening of the show in New York on March 4th! Be there!

Jeff's Facebook Fan Page

In my ongoing effort to keep up with what those crazy kids are into, I've set up a Facebook fan page!

If you're on Facebook, you can join the group here:
Jeff Cohen Studio on Facebook

I've done this because it's a good way to let people know about openings, and I think it might make a little more sense for posting minor updates about what I'm doing from day to day. I'll still be posting my finished works here, as well as news about shows and events.

As I'm writing this, my Facebook fan group consists of my daughter, my wife, myself, one good friend I had to coerce, and three actual bonafide fans! Seven in all. Can you feel my self esteem shriveling before your very eyes? Don't make me beg!

Eggshells on Manga stage 1- painting in progress by Jeff

This is the third of these eggshells on manga paintings for me. It's an interesting motif, I think - and people are really responding well to them in the galleries. As you can see, the eggshells are nearly complete. I just need to give them a few days to dry before I start adding the manga into the background.

Cloudy Tower - completed painting by Jeff

Finished! Now I just have to wait for the weather to warm up just a little so I can get down to my garage and build a box on which to mount the tiles.
