Almost done with the first pass. I had intended to just block in the basic colors as an underpainting, but as you can see, I couldn't resist getting some detail in on the neon tubes.

ReplyDeleteI don't know if I've asked you this before, but do you do all of your underpaintings and/or the first pass in oils? I have heard of some artists using acrylics for their initial layers, and I'm curious how you do it.
Thanks Carol! This one is all oils. I have done the underpaintings in goauche in the past, and sometimes in acrylic. I can never make up my mind which I like best! Switching around helps keep the process more interesting, I think. I mix a small amount of Galkyd into my turpenoid and linseed oil medium, which helps the first pass dry a little faster.
